OK, this is the shameless, "What I did on my summer vacation" page. Sorry if it offends you, but I had a great time and thought I might share it with those who would like to see some of my photos. So, below you'll find a few of the shots I recently took while visiting my friends Bernd and Jürgen in the state of Baden-Württemberg, Germany.
For those of you who don't know it, Ba-Wü is the second largest state in Germany and is located in the southwest of the country. The capital is Stuttgart and the region is the home of wine making (spectacular terraced vineyards!) and of auto manufacturers such as Mercedes Benz, Porsche and Audi. It's also frighteningly easy to find fountain pens in better stores. I did manage to bring home a new green and black Pelikan M800 to add to my collection... .
Ever heard of Max Raabe and the Palast Orchester? I have become a devoted fan of theirs. This style of music is a tribute to the "Tanzepaläste" or dance palaces of the 1920's and 30's. Wonderful stuff! Too bad their CDs are only available in European music stores. I brought a few home with me, natürlich. If you would like to order Palast Orchester CDs (or any other Euro-issue CDs) try CD Europe, it may take a few weeks but the prices are reasonable and shipping is downright cheap. Another popular Continental artist is Ute Lemper. A German whose remarkable talent enables her to sing English, French and German songs with amazing appeal, Ms. Lemper is a beauty as well. You can order her CDs from Blockbuster and I would recommend her "Berlin Cabaret Songs" (in English or German) and "Illusions" (a tribute to Marlene Dietrich and Edith Piaf) albums. Please also visit my Palast Orchester/Comedian Harmonists page.
Should you ever have the opportunity to visit, do so for you'll find the people are warm and friendly, the country breathtakingly beautiful and the food abundant and delicious. Be sure to try the Rote Grütze and the Maultaschen!
Oh, and by the way, not all of the images were taken in Ba-Wü; some were taken in Bayern (Bavaria) and in Schaffhausen, Switzerland at the Rhein waterfalls.
